Do artists & designers contribute to gentrification? What can we do about it? [debate]

July 19, 2013 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

While all of the projects featured in Spontaneous Interventions are aimed at improving the quality of life in American cities, the question remains: improvement for whom?  If some well-intended “improvements” add to gentrification, is the answer to leave underserved neighborhoods alone? Or is there alternative, a way to create a better neighborhood for the same neighbors? , In this debate-style conversation, Steve Rasmussen Cancian of Shared Spaces in Los Angeles brings his experience working with low-income neighborhoods to improve their surroundings without displacing residents into a live forum. Washington Park residents, stakeholders and all interested urbanists will debate the roles, responsibilities and impacts of artists and designers working in under-served neighborhoods; then together, they will consider how the Arts Incubator can bring art and design to the neighborhood without catalyzing gentrification

Participants: Steve Rasmusen Cancian (Shared Spaces), Cauleen Smith (artist), and others to be announced
